About this Role

As a member of the FIRST® Robotics Competition Kit of Parts team, this individual contributes to the maintenance and improvement of content and process by which resources (robot parts, tools, vouchers, software, etc.) are solicited from donors and redistributed to customers.  The Kit of Parts Engineer uses technical analysis to identify ways to improve the offerings to teams and negotiation skills to get as much of the kit contents donated as possible. They will work with a variety of other teams and groups including Engineering, Development, Marketing, Sourcing, contracted partners, donors, and other members of the immediate team.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

  • Identify, evaluate, and acquire new technologies, parts, and/or Suppliers for the Kit of Parts
  • Maintain and grow relationships with new and existing in-kind donors (i.e. companies who provide technical goods or services for use by customers)
  • Reduce Kit of Parts costs and increase quality & value for the wide variety of FIRST Robotics Competition customers
  • Plan and produce training materials and technical documentation for customers and/or volunteers
  • Build and troubleshoot robots (for purposes of game design and/or component evaluation)
  • Provide assistance to colleagues, volunteers, in-kind donors, and customers at events, over email, and/or on the phone
  • Contribute to the game design process with ideas, analysis, testing, documentation, design input/review, etc.
  • Act as staff liaison for the volunteer Chief Robot Inspector and their volunteer inspection team
  • Maintain detailed records (particularly active maintenance of the Kit of Parts database)
  • Support competition events (including Championship) in a technical role (e.g. Robot Inspector, Technical Adviser)


  • Requires BS in engineering or work experience in a related discipline
  • Generally, requires at least 2 years of directly-related experience.  Occasionally a Master’s Degree can substitute for some or all of the required previous experience in related field
  • Project management experience a plus
  • Some travel required.
