The mission of FIRST® is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

Founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology, the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge and life skills.  A prolific inventor, entrepreneur and tireless advocate for science and technology, Dean’s passion and determination to help young people discover the excitement and rewards of science and technology are the cornerstones of FIRST®. For over 30 years, Dean and the leadership team of FIRST® has resolutely led the growth of the organization to where it is now universally recognized as the leading, not-for-profit STEM engagement program for kids worldwide.

Headquartered in Manchester, New Hampshire, FIRST® has 570,000 students annually participating from 113 countries in over 3,600 events.  The organization provides over $80 million in college scholarship opportunities annually through its extensive university relationships and benefits immeasurably from the financial support of over 200 of the Fortune 500 companies and from the personal support of over 200,000 mentors, coaches and volunteers leading FIRST® programs.

FIRST® is more than robots.  The robots are a vehicle for the students to learn important life skills.  Kids often come in not knowing what to expect -of the program nor of themselves.  They leave, even after the first season, with a vision, with confidence, and with a sense that they can create their own future.”

-Dean Kamen
